How each calculator works
What every tool calculates, how it works, and what output you get — pick the one you need.
Electricity Bill Calculator
Your complete state-wise bill estimate — the main tool
What it does: Works out your exact electricity bill for any state or UT in India. Pick your state, choose your DISCOM, enter units consumed (or previous + current meter readings), and it returns a full itemised breakdown — slab-wise energy charge, fixed charge, FAC, electricity duty, meter rent and any free-unit subsidy, all subtracted correctly.
How it works: It loads the SERC-verified FY 2026-27 tariff for your DISCOM, applies telescopic slab billing (each slab's rate only counts for the units inside that slab), then adds fixed, FAC and duty before deducting the subsidy. A state-wide comparison bar shows what the same units would cost under other DISCOMs.
- Output: estimated bill in ₹, units billed, average ₹/unit, per-line charge breakdown with a visual slab bar.
- Extras: copy the summary, share on WhatsApp, or print a clean one-page bill-style PDF.
- Unique: every state's subsidy or free-unit scheme is applied automatically — zero bill, flat-rate, rebate or free slab — most bill calculators ignore this entirely.
- Tip: toggle "Meter readings" to calculate straight from your meter.
Example: 150 units with MPPKVVCL Central ≈ ₹600 with the Atal Grah Jyoti ₹100-bill benefit (cross 150 units and the subsidy is withdrawn entirely) — enter it above to see your exact figure.

TV, fridge, geyser, washing machine — any appliance, any wattage
What it does: Tells you exactly how much any single appliance adds to your bill. Enter the appliance's wattage (printed on the label or power plug), daily running hours and your ₹/unit rate.
How it works: The formula is simple and standard: watts ÷ 1000 × hours × days = units per month, then units × your rate = monthly cost. You can compare appliances side by side, so the culprit in your bill is never a mystery.
- Output: monthly units, monthly cost, daily cost and cost per hour of running.
- Works for: fridge, TV, water heater, washing machine, microwave, router — anything with a wattage label.
- Use with: the bill calculator to see the appliance's share of your total bill.
Example: a 2,000 W geyser run 1 hour daily ≈ 60 units/month ≈ ₹420/month at ₹7/unit.
Open the appliance calculator →AC Electricity Bill Calculator
Tonnage + star rating + usage = what your AC really costs
What it does: Estimates the monthly units and bill for any air conditioner — 0.75 to 2 ton, 1 to 5 star, inverter or fixed-speed.
How it works: It combines the AC's rated draw (tonnage × ~1,200 W + blower) with the BEE star rating efficiency and a realistic duty-cycle — inverter ACs run at ~70% average draw while fixed-speed runs ~90% — multiplied by your hours and days. Pick your ₹/unit rate from the presets.
- Output: estimated bill/month, units/month, units/day and average power draw in watts.
- Savings view: switch star ratings to see how much a 5-star inverter saves vs a 2-star.
- Related: cooler calculator below is the cheaper alternative for light-use summers.
Example: 1.5 ton, 3-star inverter, 8 hrs/day ≈ 240–300 units ≈ ₹1,700–2,100/month at ₹7/unit.
Open the AC calculator →Cooler Electricity Consumption Calculator
Air cooler running cost vs AC — the summer saving checker
What it does: Calculates how much your air cooler (desert or room cooler) costs to run and compares it against an AC for the same usage.
How it works: Coolers draw far less power than ACs — typically 100–250 W depending on size and fan speed. The tool multiplies watts × running hours × days × your ₹/unit rate, then shows the cooler vs AC gap so you can decide what to switch on.
- Output: monthly units, monthly cost and a side-by-side cooler vs AC comparison.
- Best for: dry-climate states (Rajasthan, Delhi, MP) where coolers work all summer.
- Related: fan calculator for the lowest-cost cooling option.
Example: a 180 W cooler, 10 hrs/day ≈ 54 units/month ≈ ₹378/month — vs an AC at 4–5× that.
Open the cooler calculator →Fan Electricity Consumption Calculator
Ceiling, table, wall and exhaust fans — per fan and per room
What it does: Shows the monthly cost of your fans — the most-used appliance in every Indian home and one of the easiest to underestimate.
How it works: Ceiling fans draw roughly 55–75 W, table fans 35–50 W, wall and exhaust fans 20–40 W. Enter fan type (or wattage directly), speed setting, running hours and fan count — the tool does the watts × hours × days math and even includes a comparison table of fan types.
- Output: units/month and cost/month for each fan, plus the total for all your fans.
- Tip: a 5-star ceiling fan saves ₹40–60/month vs an old standard fan on 8-hour daily use.
- Related: appliance calculator for any other device's running cost.
Example: 3 ceiling fans (70 W each) at 8 hrs/day ≈ 50 units/month ≈ ₹350/month at ₹7/unit.
Open the fan calculator →Induction Stove Calculator
Cooktop power, cooking time and the induction vs gas debate
What it does: Estimates what cooking on an induction stove adds to your electricity bill, based on your power level and cooking hours.
How it works: Induction cooktops draw 500–2,000 W depending on the power setting. The tool multiplies the selected power × cooking hours per day × days × your ₹/unit rate, and compares the monthly cost against cooking with LPG so you can see which is cheaper for your kitchen.
- Output: monthly units, monthly cost, and an induction vs gas cost comparison.
- Best for: kitchens using induction daily for chai, dal and one-pot meals.
- Related: bill calculator to add this to your full household estimate.
Example: 1,400 W level, 1.5 hrs/day ≈ 63 units/month ≈ ₹440/month at ₹7/unit.
Open the induction stove calculator →Solar Savings Calculator
Roof-top solar size, generation, savings and payback
What it does: Sizes a roof-top solar system for your home and shows the monthly savings and payback period, before you spend a rupee on installation.
How it works: Enter your monthly consumption (or let it pull your state's average). The tool converts units to the required kW capacity using your state's sun-hours (5.5–6.2 peak hours in MP, Rajasthan and Gujarat), estimates monthly generation, applies your slab tariff to compute savings, and shows the years to payback — including the PM Surya Ghar subsidy of up to ₹78,000 for a 3 kW system.
- Output: recommended system size, units generated/month, savings/month and payback years.
- Works for: every state — generation estimates adjust for your region's sun-hours.
- Related: bill calculator to model your bill after going solar (net metering).
Example: 3 kW in MP generates ~400–460 units/month and typically pays back in 5–7 years with the subsidy.
Open the solar calculator →EV Charging Calculator
Home charging cost per month — EV vs petrol, in plain numbers
What it does: Works out the monthly cost of charging an electric vehicle at home and compares it with petrol running costs for the same distance.
How it works: Enter your weekly distance, the vehicle's efficiency (units per 100 km), charging efficiency (~90%) and your ₹/unit rate. The tool calculates kWh needed per month, the charging cost, and what an equivalent petrol car would spend (assumes ~20 km/l at current fuel prices).
- Output: monthly charging cost, monthly units, and EV vs petrol savings per month and per year.
- Works for: scooters, hatchbacks and SUVs — any EV with a known efficiency.
- Related: solar calculator to charge your EV from roof-top solar.
Example: 1,000 km/month in a 12 kWh/100 km EV ≈ 133 units ≈ ₹930/month at ₹7/unit — vs ~₹8,000+ for petrol.

Frequently asked questions
How is an electricity bill calculated in India?
Slab-wise energy charges + fixed charge + FAC + duty + meter rent − state subsidy. The calculator shows every line.
What is a slab tariff in telescopic billing?
Each slab's rate applies only to the units inside it — e.g. 50 × ₹4.71 + 50 × ₹5.67 + 50 × ₹7.05 for the first 150 units.
What is the fixed charge on my bill?
A monthly charge based on connected load (₹/kW) or a flat rate per connection — some DISCOMs waive it below a unit limit.
What is FAC / fuel & power adjustment?
A per-unit charge (e.g. ₹0.112/unit) that recovers the DISCOM's changing fuel cost — it varies every month.
Which states have free electricity schemes?
Delhi (zero bill ≤200U), Punjab (300U), Karnataka Gruha Jyothi (200U), Telangana Gruha Jyothi (200U), AP Jagjeevan Jyothi (200U, SC/ST), Jharkhand (200U), Rajasthan (100U + rebate, 150U for solar households), Bihar (125U), TN (200U per 2-month bill), Chhattisgarh (50% off ≤200U), Uttarakhand (50% ≤100U), HP (125U free + rebate), MP (first 100U = ₹100) — auto-applied by the calculator, a feature most bill calculators skip. Updated Sep 2026.
Can I calculate from meter readings instead of units?
Yes — switch to "Meter readings" mode: units = current reading − previous reading.
How accurate is the estimate?
Tariffs are verified against SERC orders; your official bill may differ due to monthly FAC changes or arrears.
Does BijliCalculator store my data?
No. Everything runs in your browser — no account, no tracking, nothing leaves your device.
India's most complete electricity bill calculator — all 36 states, every DISCOM, subsidy included
BijliCalc.in is a free, 100% browser-based electricity bill calculator for every state and union territory in India. Pick your state, choose your DISCOM (electricity board), enter your monthly units — or your meter readings — and you instantly get an itemised estimate exactly the way your board calculates it: slab-wise energy charges, fixed charge, fuel & power adjustment (FAC), electricity duty, meter rent and the state subsidy or free-unit scheme applied at the end.
Most "bill calculator" websites give you a rough average — units multiplied by one rate. That is not how Indian electricity bills work. Every DISCOM bills on a telescopic slab tariff, adds board-specific fixed charges, and many states now deduct a free-unit subsidy. Our calculator mirrors that real billing logic, and every tariff is cross-checked against the latest SERC tariff order before it goes live.
- All 28 states and 8 union territories — from Delhi and Maharashtra to Ladakh and Lakshadweep.
- Every major DISCOM: BSES, Tata Power-DDL, MSEDCL, BESCOM, TANGEDCO, KSEB, UPPCL, PSPCL, MPPKVVCL and more.
- Free-unit and subsidy schemes auto-applied — Delhi 200 units, Karnataka Gruha Jyothi, Telangana Gruha Jyothi and others.
- Meter-reading mode: enter previous and current readings and we compute the units for you.
- No sign-up, no tracking, no data leaves your device. The calculation runs entirely in your browser.
Use the calculator above to estimate this month's bill, or jump straight to your state's dedicated page for its exact tariff table, subsidy details and a pre-filled calculator.
How to use the bill calculator — three steps
- Pick your state. Select from the State / UT dropdown — 36 options covering all of India. Your DISCOM list updates automatically.
- Choose your connection and units. Domestic or commercial (approx.), then type your monthly consumption in kWh — or switch to "Meter readings" and enter the previous and current readings from your last two bills.
- Read your itemised estimate. You'll see the total payable, average rate per unit, fixed charge and subsidy — plus a full line-by-line breakdown and a visual slab bar chart. Print it as a clean A4 bill-style PDF, copy it, or share it on WhatsApp.
The subsidy checkbox is smart: it switches itself on automatically when your selected DISCOM has an active free-unit scheme, and switches off with a clear note when it does not. You can always override it manually.
Why the estimate matches your official bill — telescopic slab billing explained
Indian DISCOMs bill energy through telescopic slab tariffs. Each slab has its own rate, and the rate applies only to the units inside that slab's range — not to your entire consumption. This is the single most misunderstood part of an electricity bill.
Take a typical tariff of 0–100 units at ₹4.00, 100–200 at ₹5.50, 200–400 at ₹7.00. For 250 units you pay: 100 × ₹4.00 + 100 × ₹5.50 + 50 × ₹7.00 = ₹1,300 energy charge. A naive calculator multiplying 250 × ₹7.00 would overcharge you by ₹450. Our engine computes each slab separately and shows you the per-slab breakdown, exactly like your bill's ledger.
On top of energy, your bill typically adds: fixed charge (per month, flat or per kW of connected load), FAC (fuel adjustment, per unit, varies monthly), electricity duty (a percentage of the bill, state-specific) and meter rent in some states. Every state page lists these exact numbers — see the verified tariff directory.
State-wise free electricity and subsidy schemes 2026-27
Nearly a third of Indian households now benefit from a state free-unit or subsidy scheme. The exact numbers vary by state and are updated by us whenever a SERC tariff order or government notification changes them. Current schemes, auto-applied by our calculator:
- Delhi — ≤200 units: entire bill ₹0 (opt-in); 201–400 units: 50% discount capped at ₹800/month (BRPL, BYPL, Tata Power-DDL, NDMC). Sep 2026: Free 3 kW rooftop solar panels for 2.3 lakh households consuming ≤400 units under PM Surya Ghar.
- Maharashtra — no free units; FY 2026-27 MYT order cuts ≤100-unit tariffs ~10% now, 26% by FY 2030 (MSEDCL).
- Karnataka — Gruha Jyothi: 200 units free, entire bill ₹0 (BESCOM, MESCOM, HESCOM, GESCOM). 5-slab tariff: ₹3.30–₹9.00/unit.
- Tamil Nadu — 200 units free per 2-month bill for consumers billing up to 500 units per bill (TANGEDCO).
- Uttar Pradesh — no free units; Bijli Raahat subsidy embedded in LMV-1 net rates (₹3.70/unit rural ≤100U).
- Bihar — 125 units free per month for all domestic consumers (Mukhya Mantri Vidyut Upbhokta Sahayta Yojana, since Aug 2025). Flat ₹7.42/unit, ₹80/kW fixed, 6% duty.
- Punjab — 300 units free, whole bill ₹0 (600 units per 2-month bill) for eligible connections (PSPCL).
- Haryana — no free units; Category I rates ₹2.20/₹2.70 up to 100 units and no fixed charge below 300 units (UHBVN, DHBVN).
- Andhra Pradesh — Jagjeevan Jyothi: 200 units free per month for SC/ST households (all AP DISCOMs).
- Telangana — Gruha Jyothi: 200 units free, entire bill ₹0, no cap.
- Jharkhand — Mukhyamantri Urja Khushhali: 200 units free, entire bill ₹0, no cap.
Also live: Rajasthan's Mukhyamantri Free Electricity (100 units free, 150 for PM Surya Ghar households), MP's Atal Grih Jyoti (first 100 units for ₹100, eligible ≤150 units), Himachal's 125-unit zero bill, Uttarakhand's 50% bill subsidy ≤100 units, Chhattisgarh's half-bill on the first 200 units, and West Bengal's Hasir Alo lifeline credit. For every one of these, the calculator shows a green "Subsidy −₹…" line and a "Bill before subsidy" row, so you can see exactly how much the state is paying on your behalf. States without a scheme — Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Odisha, Kerala and others — show a clear "no free-unit scheme active" note instead of a false discount.

Your bill line by line — what you actually pay for
Open any official Indian electricity bill and you will see these charge components. Our breakdown mirrors them one-to-one:
- Energy charges (slab-wise): the biggest component — units consumed, billed at your DISCOM's telescopic slab rates.
- Fixed / demand charge: a monthly fee for keeping your connection alive, either a flat amount (e.g. ₹130/month for MSEDCL) or per kW of sanctioned load (e.g. ₹20/kW in Delhi).
- Fuel & Power Adjustment (FAC): a per-unit charge that recovers fuel cost variation — it changes every month with fuel prices.
- Electricity duty: a state government levy, usually 3–12% of the bill (MP charges 12%).
- Meter rent: a small monthly charge for the meter (e.g. ₹10/month in MP).
- Subsidy / free-unit scheme: the state's discount, deducted from your payable — often zeroes out low-usage bills completely.
Your total is energy + fixed + FAC + duty + meter rent − subsidy. That is precisely the formula our engine implements, and it is why a Delhi household opted into the subsidy and using under 200 units pays exactly ₹0.
Fixed charge, FAC, duty and meter rent — the fine print
Fixed charge is not a penalty — it is a fee
Boards charge a fixed amount every month for the meter and connection, regardless of usage. It is usually flat (₹15–₹130/month) or load-based (₹/kW of sanctioned load). Some boards waive it below a unit limit — Haryana bills no fixed charge below 300 units, and MPPKVVCL charges ₹134/month flat up to 150 units, switching to ₹300 per kW above that. Our load field appears automatically for boards with load-based fixed charges.
FAC changes your bill every month
Fuel & Power Adjustment passes the rising or falling cost of coal, gas and solar procurement onto consumers at a per-unit rate. It is why your bill can grow even when your consumption is identical to last month. Every tariff record on this site carries the latest FAC rate, and our estimate flags it so you know which part of your bill is volatile.
Electricity duty is a state tax
Duty is charged as a percentage of your bill (excluding subsidy), e.g. 12% in Madhya Pradesh, and funds state-level electricity infrastructure. We apply it automatically from each state's published rate.
Meter rent and other small charges
A few states add ₹10–₹15/month meter rent or small regulatory charges. Where published, these are included in the estimate — nothing hidden, every line explained.
How the subsidy toggle works
The "Apply state subsidy / free-unit scheme" checkbox is not cosmetic — it runs the real subsidy logic: the calculator works out what the scheme waives (e.g. Delhi: the whole bill up to 200 units at the ₹3.00 slab), applies per-unit rebates and caps where the scheme has them (₹800 in Delhi's 201–400 band), and deducts the result from your gross bill. The saving is shown as a green deduction line plus a "Bill before subsidy" row, so you always know what the state is paying for you.
Two things to remember: schemes have eligibility conditions (household income, sanctioned load, usage cap) — our estimate assumes you qualify. And if a scheme's cap is lower than the free-unit slab cost, we apply the cap, exactly like the board does.
10 practical ways to lower your electricity bill
- Run your AC at 24–26°C instead of 20°C — every degree costs roughly 5–6% more power. See the exact numbers with our AC bill calculator.
- Use an appliance cost calculator to find your top three energy guzzlers — fridge, geyser and AC usually dominate.
- Replace old ceiling fans with BLDC (star-rated) fans — up to 40% savings. Try the fan calculator.
- Shift to an air cooler instead of AC for the dry season — coolers use 70–90% less power. Compare with the cooler calculator.
- Cook smarter: a pressure cooker or induction on low-med heat saves units. Check induction vs gas costs.
- Switch geyser usage to morning hours and reduce the thermostat — it is often 20–30% of a household's bill.
- Unplug idle electronics and routers at night; set TVs and lights on timers.
- Replace incandescent/CFL with LED everywhere — LED pays for itself in months.
- If your board gives a solar net-metering policy, compare rooftop solar payback for your state — many states now credit 200+ free units for solar homes.
- If you drive an EV, charge at night at slab-discounted rates — the EV charging calculator shows monthly cost.
Plug your new consumption into the calculator after each change — watching the estimate drop is the best motivation.
