Kerala bill — quick answers

Why does my KSEB bill show two months?

Bi-monthly billing is standard in Kerala. For the calculator, either halve the units or enter both meter readings — the tool handles either.

Is Kerala power really this cheap?

The entry slabs are, thanks to hydel resources. The ₹9.20 top slab keeps big consumers honest; check the 200-unit cliff in the slab bars.

Kerala electricity bill calculator — how your bijli bill is built

KSEB (Kerala State Electricity Board) serves the entire state with a 10-slab telescopic tariff: ₹3.35 (0–50), ₹4.25 (51–100), ₹5.35 (101–150), ₹7.20 (151–200), ₹8.50 (201–250), ₹6.75 (251–300), ₹7.60 (301–350), ₹7.95 (351–400), ₹8.25 (401–500) and ₹9.20 (501+) per unit, plus a slab-linked monthly fixed charge (₹50 up to 100 units rising to ₹310 above 500 units; ₹105 used here for a typical 1–2 kW household) and 10% electricity duty — with no separate FAC line.

Thiruvananthapuram to Kasargod share one KSERC ladder, and bi-monthly billing is common — divide the units by two months when estimating a monthly figure.

Example: your Kerala bill for 250 units

Take a Kerala household using 250 units in one month on KSEB. The telescopic energy charge is 50 × ₹3.35 + 50 × ₹4.25 + 50 × ₹5.35 + 50 × ₹7.2 + 50 × ₹8.5 = ₹1432.50. Add the fixed charge (₹105.00), FAC (₹0.00) and electricity duty (₹143.25) — that gives a gross bill of ₹1680.75. With no subsidy in this state, ₹1680.75 is your payable.

Here is the same 250 units across every DISCOM in Kerala — useful when your board's name differs from the common one:

Does Kerala offer a free-unit scheme?

Kerala currently bills without a domestic free-unit subsidy, so the calculator's checkbox stays off and no green deduction line appears. That is tariff design, not an error — the energy charge is collected in full and the fixed charge, FAC and duty apply on top. If the state announces a scheme, we add it to the data and the toggle lights up automatically.

The table below is generated from the same data the calculator uses, so what you see here is exactly what is charged. Looking for the per-unit electricity price in The slab column IS your per-unit rate — each rate applies only to the units inside its own slab range.

Remember: in telescopic billing each slab rate applies only to the units inside its range. Many websites multiply one rate by total units — that is wrong and overstates bills. This calculator, like your DISCOM, adds slab by slab.

4 practical ways to lower your Kerala bill

  1. Kerala's humid climate means the AC, fridge and pump are the load kings — audit them with the appliance tool.
  2. Bi-monthly bills mislead monthly budgeting; use the meter-reading mode across your actual billing days.
  3. The ₹5.35 → ₹7.20 jump at 150 units is the steepest — hold consumption under it.
  4. Monsoon solar is weaker; size a plant with the solar tool's Kerala sun-hours.

Quick questions about Kerala bills

Why is my KSEB bill for two months?

KSEB bills most domestic connections bi-monthly — roughly 60 days of consumption. Halve the units for a monthly view.

Is there a free-unit scheme?

No — Kerala does not offer a domestic free-unit subsidy.

What is the fixed charge?

Slab-linked: ₹50/month up to 100 units, rising step-wise to ₹310 above 500 units — the calculator uses ₹105, the typical 1–2 kW household band.

Why is the first slab so cheap?

KSERC kept ₹3.35/unit for the first 50 units to protect low-income households, with a mid-ladder dip at 251–300 units.
