What does the appliance electricity cost calculator do?
Every electrical appliance in your home is a small meter running on its own — the geyser counts up while you bathe, the fridge ticks all night, the TV adds a little with every serial, and the iron adds a burst on Monday mornings. This calculator answers one deceptively simple question: how many rupees does a single appliance cost you per month? Enter its wattage, how many hours a day it runs, how many days in a month, and your electricity rate — and it returns the exact units consumed and the exact cost.
What makes this tool powerful is that it works for anything. A branded appliance list is built in (geyser, heater, AC, iron, microwave, washing machine, fridge, fan, TV, LED bulb and more), but there is also a custom mode where you type in the wattage printed on any device — even an odd one like a treadmill or a massage chair. The one formula behind every estimate
The maths could not be simpler — it is the same calculation inscribed on your electricity meter:
- Watts → kilowatts: 1,000 watts = 1 kW
- Units used = kW × hours/day × days in the month
- Cost = units × your rate (₹ per unit)
So a 2,000-watt geyser running 1 hour a day is 2 kW × 30 hours = 60 units a month. At ₹7/unit that is ₹420. A 55-watt TV running 5 hours is just 8.25 units (~₹58). The bigger the wattage and the longer the run, the faster the cost multiplies — which is why one 2,000W device can outweigh ten 100W ones.

Why your bill is far more than all appliances added
If you add up every appliance above, you get a few hundred units — yet the bill shows double or triple. That happens because of three things this tool deliberately isolates:

The hidden cost: standby and phantom power
Most modern electronics never fully switch off. A TV on standby, a set-top box, a router, a microwave with a clock, a washing machine with a display — each draws 5–15 watts quietly, 24 hours a day. Ten such devices average ~100 watts around the clock: that is 72 units a month, or over ₹500/year at ₹7/unit, spent for absolutely nothing. Switch off at the socket, or use a power strip with a single switch, and this dies instantly.
How to read the wattage label on any appliance
Almost every appliance carries its draw on a sticker or embossed plate — look for "W" or "Watts" on the back of the TV, the base of the iron, the side of the fridge and the rear of the AC. Bright appliances list it as "Input power". If only amps and volts are shown, multiply them: watts = volts × amps. For star-rated devices like fridges and ACs, the label shows the annual units directly, which is even more useful than the wattage.
Small habits that shrink the appliance bill
- Switch off — don't leave in standby — TVs, decoders, microwaves and computers
- Heat smaller volumes — a kettle for one cup beats a full immersion rod
- Run the washing machine on cold and full loads only
- Defrost the fridge; a thick ice layer makes the compressor run longer
- Clean the iron and dryer coils — residue adds running minutes

How do I calculate units from watts?
Divide watts by 1,000 to get kW, then multiply by running hours and days. That kilowatt-hour is your "unit".
Does a bigger TV use more electricity?
Only by size and panel technology. A 43" LED draws more than a 32" LED, but both are far cheaper than old CFL-heavy television.
Is the fridge the costliest always-on device?
Usually the top of the "always on" list, but a good 4/5-star fridge is comparable to a couple of hours of heater per day.
