What does the cooler electricity calculator show?

Air coolers are the most economical cooling devices most Indian households can own — and also the most underrated. A decent room cooler draws barely a quarter of what a 1.5-ton AC draws, yet it brings the temperature down meaningfully in dry Indian summers. This calculator computes your cooler's real running cost from three inputs: the cooler's motor size, whether the water pump runs alongside, and daily usage hours — then automatically compares it against running a 1.5-ton AC for the same hours, so you see your monthly saving in rupees.

The comparison is the heart of this tool. Most people know "cooler is cheaper than AC", but very few know how much cheaper in actual currency. This calculator puts a precise number on it — and that number is usually large enough to justify a cooler purchase even in a home that already has an AC.

How cooler electricity consumption is calculated

An air cooler has up to three power draws. The main fan motor (typically 150–250 watts in a room cooler), a small water pump that keeps the pads wet (40–60 watts, and it can be switched off when the tank is filled), and sometimes a swing motor for air distribution. The calculator lets you pick the cooler size and pump option, adds the watts, and runs the standard units formula:

  • Total draw = cooler motor watts + pump watts (if used)
  • Units/month = (total watts ÷ 1,000) × hours/day × days
  • Cost = units × your electricity rate

  • Change the honeycomb pads every season — clogged pads mean less evaporation, more motor strain

  • Run the pump only until the pads are wet, then switch it off and use the fan alone
