What does the EV charging calculator show?

Buying an electric car or scooter in India usually starts with a question at the dinner table: "How much will it really cost to charge at home?" The honest answer varies wildly — it depends on how many kilometres you drive, how efficient your vehicle is, and what slab your home tariff lands in. This calculator takes your weekly driving distance, vehicle efficiency (km/kWh), and electricity rate, and returns the monthly charging cost in rupees, the energy your car consumes, the petrol cost for the same kilometres, and the money you save every month.

That petrol comparison is the number that closes the deal for most families: charging at home costs roughly one-fifth to one-third of fuel for the same distance. But the calculator also exposes the catch — charge in higher slab brackets or at public fast-chargers and the saving shrinks sharply, which is exactly why the rate input is not hidden away.

How home charging cost is calculated

The model follows the actual physics of charging plus a small honesty tax:

  • Energy needed = kilometres driven ÷ vehicle efficiency (km/kWh)
  • Grid energy = energy needed × charging-loss factor (wall chargers waste ~5–10%)
  • Cost = grid energy × your electricity unit rate

Example: 300 km/week in a car doing 6 km/kWh needs 50 kWh of battery energy, ~54 kWh from the wall. At ₹7/unit that's ₹378/week — about ₹1,640/month. The same 1,300 km in a 16 km/L petrol car is ~81 litres — over ₹8,000 at today's pump prices. The calculator puts both on screen so the saving is visible in black and white.

Read the three rows as the same driver, three choices. Home charging cuts fuel cost by roughly 80%; public fast-charging still halves it — but note the kWh is lower on the public row because fast-charging wastes less time cooling, so the real spread between them is the rate difference.

Home charging vs public fast charging

These are two different economies, not two price lists:

  • Home (3.3–7.2 kW AC wall box) — ₹5–9/unit, overnight, zero time cost; the tariff it bills against is your slab rate
  • Public DC fast chargers — ₹16–25/unit, billed per kWh with higher network rates; only worth it for long trips
  • Shared/office slow chargers — ₹8–12/unit; a middle ground for apartment dwellers

Apartment owners who cannot install a wall box usually live in the ₹12–20 band — still comfortably cheaper than petrol, but the breakeven picture versus a hybrid gets close enough that this calculator is worth running honestly.

How long does a full charge take?

Time is a function of battery size and charger power, not cost — but it shapes behaviour:

  • 3.3 kW home socket — a 40 kWh battery takes ~12–14 hours (perfect overnight)
  • 7.2 kW home wall box — same battery in ~6 hours
  • 25–50 kW fast charger — 10–80% in 60–90 minutes
  • 150 kW ultra-fast — 10–80% in 20–30 minutes, mostly on highways

Two-wheelers charge in a fraction of this — most scooters fully refill in 3–5 hours on a normal socket.

Your tariff slab changes the EV answer

An EV is a greedy slab-jumper. Adding 180 kWh of monthly charging can push a household from a middle slab into the top one, where the marginal rate can be ₹8–10. Some states (Delhi, UP, Gujarat, Karnataka among others) have introduced separate EV home-tariffs or time-of-day discounts — if your DISCOM offers a dedicated EV meter, the calculation changes in your favour. That is why this tool asks for your marginal rate, not your average.

EV + solar: the perfect pairing

Solar generation peaks at noon; most cars charge at night — but the combination still works brilliantly: your panels offset the household's daytime use while the car charges from grid at night, and in many states the DISCOM net-metering cycle means the solar surplus produced midday literally pays for the midnight charge. Households that added 3–5 kW solar alongside an EV report effective charging costs of ₹2–4/unit — petrol territory by fuel standard, unbeatable by any other.

Charging habits that save money

  • Charge overnight at home whenever possible — never habitually at fast chargers
  • Set the charge limit to 80% for daily use — cheaper per charge and kinder to the battery
  • If your state offers a night tariff, charge in that window
  • Check for DISCOM EV-specific tariffs before installing your meter
  • Keep tyres inflated — range loss is fuel cost you didn't need
