Bihar's 125 free units — built into this calculator
Since August 2025 every Bihar household gets 125 free units — the energy charge is waived with no eligibility maze, and it lands automatically on the SBPDCL/NBPDCL bill. This calculator applies it automatically too; above 125 units normal slab billing takes over, exactly as it does on your actual bill.

Bihar electricity bill calculator — how your bijli bill is built
Bihar's power is served by SBPDCL (south) and NBPDCL (north) on a single flat tariff of ₹7.42/unit for all consumption — no slab ladder — with an ₹80/kW monthly fixed charge, 6% electricity duty and ₹0.20/unit FAC (monthly variable). The same rate applies to both urban and rural consumers; only the fixed charge differs (₹80/kW urban, ₹40/kW rural).
With every unit billed at the same ₹7.42, the 125-unit free scheme is the only game in town: it is what pushes eligible households' energy cost to zero.
Example: your Bihar bill for 250 units
Take a Bihar household using 250 units in one month on SBPDCL (South). The telescopic energy charge is 250 × ₹7.42 = ₹1855.00. Add the fixed charge (₹160.00), FAC (₹50.00) and electricity duty (₹68.25) — that gives a gross bill of ₹2188.90. The state subsidy of ₹927.50 is then deducted, leaving ₹1205.75 payable.
Here is the same 250 units across every DISCOM in Bihar — useful when your board's name differs from the common one:
| DISCOM | Energy | Fixed | FAC | Duty | Subsidy | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SBPDCL (South) | ₹1855.00 | ₹160.00 | ₹50.00 | ₹68.25 | −₹927.50 | ₹1205.75 |
| NBPDCL (North) | ₹1855.00 | ₹160.00 | ₹50.00 | ₹68.25 | −₹927.50 | ₹1205.75 |
Bihar subsidy / free-unit scheme
Under the Mukhya Mantri Vidyut Upbhokta Sahayta Yojana, every domestic household in Bihar gets 125 units free per month — the energy charge for those units is waived. The calculator applies it automatically and shows the saved amount in green.
Bihar tariff details — live data
The table below is generated from the same data the calculator uses, so what you see here is exactly what is charged. Looking for the per-unit electricity price in The slab column IS your per-unit rate — each rate applies only to the units inside its own slab range.
| DISCOM | Slabs | Fixed charge | FAC |
|---|---|---|---|
| SBPDCL (South) | 1–above 1 @ ₹7.42 | ₹80/kW load (₹80 flat if ≤ 0U) | ₹0.2/unit |
| NBPDCL (North) | 1–above 1 @ ₹7.42 | ₹80/kW load (₹80 flat if ≤ 0U) | ₹0.2/unit |
Remember: in telescopic billing each slab rate applies only to the units inside its range. Many websites multiply one rate by total units — that is wrong and overstates bills. This calculator, like your DISCOM, adds slab by slab.
4 practical ways to lower your Bihar bill
- Keep consumption inside the free band where possible — the 125-unit subsidy is the biggest win in Bihar.
- With a flat ₹7.42 rate there is no slab cliff to dodge — the 125-unit boundary is the only line that matters.
- At ₹7.42/unit an EV or higher appliance load stays affordable vs the priciest states.
- Pay via the official portal to keep an audit trail and avoid assistant fees.
